ONAPA field trips will last from 2 to 3 hours or longer depending on interest.
Bring water and a snack or a bag lunch to tide you over and dress for the weather and terrain. Insect repellent is recommended.

Discover the World of Lichens at Secrest Aboretum on Friday, May 3, at 10 am
ONAPA Advisor, naturalist, and professional nature photographer, Ian Adams will be the leader of this outstanding event to be held at Secrest Arboretum within the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. There will be a PowerPoint presentation followed by a field trip around the arboretum grounds to view lichens. Secrest Aboretum is located at 2122 Williams Road, Wooster. Enjoy spring bird migration at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area Wednesday, May 15
Jason Larson, naturalist and expert birder will be leading this birding field trip to view spring migrants in and around Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in Ottawa County. Meet at the east end of the parking lot at the exit of the birding trail at 8 am for early participants; then again at 10 am for late comers. No limit on the number of participants, but participants should REGISTER with [email protected].

Cedar Bog State Nature Preserve Tour is Thursday, June 20, 10 am
Ohio History Connection’s Cedar Bog State Nature Preserve is often visited by ONAPA's stewardship volunteers to help manage woody interlopers . Guy Denny, President of ONAPA and author of Peatlands of Ohio and the Southern Great Lakes Region will lead this tour along the boardwalk through this outstanding fen ecosystem. Wednesday, June 26, 10 am, enjoy a special tour of the Oak Openings Region
DNAP Assistant Botanist and outstanding naturalist, Andrew Lane Gibson, will lead this driving and walking tour through several sites in the Oak Openings Region of Northwestern Ohio. The region is a favorite of both birders and botanists.

Thursday, July 11, learn more about the geology of Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve Retired DNAP Regional Manager, ONAPA board member, naturalist and author of Rainbows of Rock, Tables of Stone, Timothy Snyder will lead this tour through Clifton Gorge. Tour of Denny's Tallgrass Prairie set for Saturday, July 27, at 10 am to 1 pm

Several prairie experts will be on hand to guide small groups through the native flora of the prairie situated in Knox County. Members and friends are invited to tour the gently rolling landscape in peak bloom: compass plants, royal catchfly, coneflowers, cup plants, and so much more host a gathering of butterflies, bees and other pollinators, during the tour. The prairie was created on 20-plus acres of once-cultivated farmland and also features two ponds with native hibiscus, gentians and other natives that thrive in wetter conditions. This “free to the public event" takes place at Denny’s Tallgrass Prairie which is a 20-plus acre prairie located in Knox County about 45 minutes north of Columbus. The street address is 6021 Mt. August 24 field trip will identify shorebirds along the Lake Erie on their migration south
Jason Larson, naturalist, expert birder, and Director of the Richland County Park District and Gorman Nature Center will be leading this driving and walking tour of several of his favorite sites along Lake Erie. We will be identifying shorebirds on their southbound fall migration.

Tour the James P. Amon Biodiversity Reserve (Beavercreek Wetlands Association) with naturalist and author of Discovery and Renewal on Huffman Prairie, David Nolin. He will lead participants along the boardwalk of this outstanding fen wetland nature preserve located in Greene County. Start time is 10 a.m.

Visit ancient site that features rare plants Saturday, September 21
Visit Fort Hill State Memorial with Andrew Lane Gibson, Assistant Botantist with Division of Natural Areas and Preserve. An accomplished, well-known botanist and naturalist, he will lead this field trip to one of his favorite hiking sites, located in Highland County. Start time is 10 a.m.

Enjoy an early autumn tour of Cedar Bog State Nature Preserve Wednesday, September 25 Tour of the Ohio History Connection’s Cedar Bog State Nature Preserve with ONAPA President Guy Denny. Author of Peat Deposits of Ohio and the Southern Great Lakes Region will lead this tour along the boardwalk through this exceptional state nature preserve, perhaps the finest remaining fen in the Midwest.

Collect seeds of prairie plants for your garden Saturday, October 5 with the help of guides
Prairie Seed Collecting - October 5, 10 am: Here is your chance to try your hand at growing native prairie plants. Visitors to the free Saturday event may collect all the seeds they want from Denny’s Tallgrass Prairie and learn how to establish their own prairie gardens. Several prairie specialists will be on hand to answer questions and help identify various species of prairie plants.
Participants should bring hand pruners, and containers such as paper bags in which they can deposit and label the seeds they collect. |
